Mandala wall art buying guide: multi layer, wooden and 3D mandalas

What is a multi layer mandala?

A multi layer mandala (also called a multilayer or multi-layered mandala) is a mandala design built from several separate layers of cut wood stacked on top of each other. Each layer is cut slightly differently, so when they are placed together the pattern rises off the wall in 3D. Light falling on the edges creates soft shadows, which is why a layered mandala looks richer and more alive than a flat print or painting.

Wooden mandala wall decor vs printed mandala art

Mandala art comes in many forms: drawings, dot paintings, posters and tapestries. A wooden mandala wall hanging is different because it is a physical piece with texture and depth. Our 3D mandala wall art is cut from engineered wood and layered by hand, so it looks like a carved relief and lasts for years. New to mandalas? Read what a mandala is and what it means.

How we make each multi layer mandala

Every Embercut Studio mandala starts as an original digital design. We split the design into 7 to 10 layers, laser-cut each layer from wood, paint or finish it by hand, and then assemble the layers one by one in our Guntur, Andhra Pradesh studio. D-ring hooks are fixed on the back so the piece is ready to hang the day it arrives. Read more in how multilayer wooden wall art is made.

How many layers should you choose?

Choosing the right size

  • Around 50 cm tall: suits entrance walls, pooja corners, bedrooms and the space above a console or side table.
  • Around 70 cm tall: works as the main feature above a two- or three-seater sofa or bed.
  • As a simple rule, the artwork should cover about half to two-thirds of the width of the furniture below it.

Where to hang a multi layer mandala

Popular spots in Indian homes are the living room wall above the sofa, the entrance or foyer, the pooja room and the bedroom. Mandalas are traditional symbols of harmony and wholeness, and many families also consider Vastu when choosing a wall. See our guide to mandala wall art meaning and where to hang it.
